Flat Roof Project Requirements
Alongside main contractor BAM Construction and architects Populous, Lakesmere saw the project become its first fully Building Information Modelling (BIM) integrated contract to date, with a collaborative working practice between all teams involved in the project being essential to its successful delivery. Working closely with BAM, Lakesmere devised a specification to satisfy the vision of the extensive design team, as well as providing a practical and economic solution.
With its unique honeycombed external façade and kaleidoscope lighting, the UK’s first ‘fan shaped’ arena has quickly become one of Yorkshire’s most iconic buildings. Opening in September 2013, the 13,500-capacity concert and events venue is set to play an important role in the regeneration of the Claypit Lane area of Leeds, as well as boosting the city’s economy through tourism and employment. Due to the close proximity to residential areas, the Lakesmere team had to overcome a number of environmental and noise considerations when installing the roof. It was vital that the arena’s roof adhered to criteria set out in Part E of the Building Regulations.
Sika Sarnafil Solutions
By specifying the S327-18EL Copper Patina Sika Sarnafil system along with suitable insulation for the 7,500sq m main auditorium roof, it was ensured that the arena achieved the desired acoustic performance in terms of noise breakout and sound reverberation. Sika Sarnafil S327-18EL also has outstanding resistance to weathering, including permanent UV radiation and flexibility in cold weathers.
In keeping with the projects’ sustainable design, the roof’s complex gutter system was installed in Sika Saranfil S327-15EL Light grey membrane. A further feature is the installation of a small green roof using the Sarnavert system.
The fact that Sika Sarnafil was the first roofing manufacturer to be BIM ready played a huge part in the specification, and in turn improved the ability to review designs and rationalise ideas, whilst cost saving using BIM was highlighted through material specifications and design coordination.
